Making Apple Cider at Home: The Basics

There are a few different ways and methods to make a homemade Apple Cider. This is probably one of the easiest and fastest methods out there, using a large pot and cooking it simply on the stove for about two hours. While orchards use a large wooden press to make cold apple cider, this is a hot version.

Use Sweet and Tart Apples

I like using different kinds of apples in my Apple Cider recipe. I find a combination of sweet and tart apples create a nice balance of flavor. I also add orange for a little flavor because it lends itself so nicely to the cloves and other spices. I used Organic Fuji’s (sweet) and Granny Smith (tart). Here are a few other kinds of apples that would work well for this recipe:

  • Sweet: Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Gala or Fugi.
  • Tart: Granny Smith, McIntosh or Cortland.

Sugar is Optional

Depending on the time of year, how sweet your apples are and/or your personal preference, feel free to reduce the brown sugar to an amount you feel comfortable using. This recipe is extremely forgiving when it comes to the sugar. If you happen to complete this recipe and you find your cider is not sweet enough, feel free to reheat the strained cider gently and dissolve a little more sugar into it.

No Apple Press Needed

If you were to go to a farm or orchard selling apple cider, it would most likely be out of an apple press. An apple press is simply a hand cranked system that grinds whole apples into a pulp. That pulp is then pressed to remove all the juice which is apple cider. This would be served cold.

No Crockpot Required

While you definitely can cook this cider in a crockpot (4-6 hours on low), this version does not require it! Simply add all ingredients to your pot and cook. Mash the apples, remove the oranges, cook a little longer, then strain.

What’s the Difference Between Apple Cider and Apple Juice?

Apple Cider and Apple Juice are similar, both being juice that come from apples. The difference lies in the filtration process. Apple Cider is not filtered. Apple juice is filtered, pasteurized, sometimes with sugar added, depending on the brand.

How to Make Apple Cider At Home

Like lots of my recipes, there isn’t anything HARD about this recipe…like at all. You just need a couple of hours to babysit these apples on the stove, then strain them out to get the cider. Yum! For full recipe details, see the printable recipe card down below. Here is what you can expect making this Apple Cider:

Wash, Core and Quarter Apples

Using five pounds of sweet and tart apples (I used fuji’s and granny smith), wash them thoroughly with cold water. Cut them into quarters and remove any seeds. You will be straining this entire pot of cider, so coring is optional. I prefer to core, though. Add all the apples to a large pot.

Add Orange, Brown Sugar, Water and Spices

To your apples, add in one navel orange cut in half, 1/2 cup brown sugar (or less, depending on preference), cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and 8 cups of cold water. Stir well to incorporate the brown sugar and submerge the apples in the water.

Cook the Apples

Bring the entire pot to a boil, then reduce to simmer and cook covered for one full hour.

Remove orange peels, mash remaining apples and cover and cook on low heat for another 45 minutes.

Strain the Apple Cider

After the apples have finished cooking, remove from the heat and transfer to a fine mesh sieve or strainer lined with cheesecloth. This process can take quite a few minutes because it takes some time to get all the juice out of the apple mash. Don’t worry! This is normal.

Once you have strained the cider from the apple skins and mash, voila! Your apple cider is done and ready to enjoy!

Serve Hot or Cold, With Whipped Cream!

The beauty of this recipe is it can be enjoyed hot, cold or at room temperature. We couldn’t wait to get a taste, so we had it warm with whipped cream and caramel sauce. Oh boy, was it a treat! So so good! Also delicious cold.

The consistency of this cider is smooth, but a little thicker than an apple juice would be, thanks to us not filtering it. Totally normal for apple cider.

Storing Apple Cider

Homemade Apple Cider can last up to two weeks in the fridge. I like storing mine in a large pitcher with a lid in the fridge. Before serving, be sure to stir it well. Of course it’s tasty cold, but feel free to pour it into a mug and microwave it to enjoy hot.

Apple Crumble

I remember being a little girl and watching my mom make her recipe for apple crumble which was heavy on the apples and very light on the crumble and I remember thinking what a travesty it was. I was probably 5.

So, as an adult armed with a decent amount of kitchen knowledge, I took matters into my own hands promising myself that I would create a recipe that even I, the cooked fruit hater, could love.

And I did it! I took it pretty easy on the apples, doubled the normal amount of crumble topping, and was quite heavy-handed with the warm salted caramel sauce for the ultimate fall dessert that everyone and their mom will love. So let’s make this baby!

top down view of ingredients in bowls

How to Make Apple Crumble with Salted Caramel

This apple crumble recipe has three main components. The sauce, crumble, and apple filling. Each section needs its own set of ingredients and so I’m going to break it down for you. See the printable recipe card below for full details on ingredients & measurements. Here is what you can expect when making this recipe.

Make the Crumble Topping

This is a super easy process where you just measure, dump, and mix. Combine flour, brown sugar, white sugar, butter and salt into a bowl (or stand mixer bowl) and mix. The mixture will be crumbly but stay together when squeezed. Set aside.

Make Salted Caramel Sauce

The hardest part of this recipe is probably making the homemade salted caramel. I’m going to walk you through the steps pretty well but if it still intimidates you in any way, there are plenty of salted caramel sauces on the market which are great options. Even warming up store bought caramel sauce and adding in a little sea salt will work too. Here we go 🙂

  1. Heat sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat to melt the sugar. Continue cooking and swirling sugar until it turns amber in color.
  2. Whisk in sea salt and heavy cream. The mixture will bubble up violently briefly. Continue whisking until the sauce is smooth.
  3. Stir in butter and vanilla. Set aside.

Prep Apples + Cook

Prepare apples and toss in lemon juice. The best apples to use for this dish are granny smith apples. This is simply because of their taste, texture, and good baking qualities.

Cook apples in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat in butter to draw out moisture. Sprinkle with salt to draw out all the moisture possible. Drain apples and place back into skillet. This process should take about 5-7 minutes of cooking.

Layer + Assemble Apple Crumble

Pour 3/4 of prepared caramel sauce into the apples and stir gently. Top with the crumble topping.

Bake + Serve

Bake at 350 for 20 minutes and serve with remaining caramel sauce.

Toppings

Besides the caramel sauce, you can also top this dessert with ice cream or whipped cream. Think of it as a deconstructed apple pie. So all that creaminess perfectly compliments this apple crumble recipe.

pouring more salted caramel sauce over crumble topping

Leftovers

I doubt you’ll have any leftovers because this dessert is SO divine! But if you do, don’t worry. Cover with plastic wrap and store your apple crumble in the fridge for up to 4 days.

You can reheat it in the microwave for a few seconds at a time or pop it into the oven to warm it up.

Perfectly Baked Ham slathered with a homemade Brown Sugar Glaze is a tasty and easy dish you can make for any special occasion or holiday. It’s always a crowd-pleaser and makes Easter or Christmas dinner extra special with no muss or fuss.

All About Ham

Cured, smoked, and baked are all indicators that the ham you’re about to buy has been pre-cooked. In fact, most ham you buy at the grocery store is already safe to eat and you just have to reheat it. Plus around Easter or Christmas, they tend to go on sale.

I always buy a cooked, bone-in spiral ham because most of the work is already done for me. But taking a few extra steps while baking your ham can bring it from good to great. I love the Kirkland Signature hams from Costco because the flavor and price can’t be beaten.

What Else Do I Need?

  • A meat thermometer is pretty essential when cooking big cuts like this one. Invest in a good one like this and you’ll be set for a long time.
  • The last thing you’ll need for this recipe is this Brown Sugar Ham Glaze. It’s such a simple addition but it really takes this ham to new heights. Of course, any glaze is fine, but I love this glaze recipe because it’s the best pairing of savory and sweet, matching garlic with maple syrup, brown sugar, and mustard. All glazes should basically do the same thing: caramelize the outside and give more flavor.

How to Bake a Ham

For full details on how to bake a ham, see the printable recipe card down below 🙂

Preheat and Prep Ham

Preheat oven to 275 degrees. If you are baking a cooked, bone-in spiral ham, the great news is it’s already cooked and you’re just basically reheating. The bad news is if you overbake, you can dry it out easily. Since it’s already sliced, it really doesn’t take much to dry it out. To combat this, place ham face down into a baking dish or roasting pan and cover with foil. Keeping it covered with foil will keep that moisture in!

Bake and Baste Ham

Bake 12-15 minutes per pound (or cook according to specific package directions). Baste 1-2 times through cooking with ham juices that have accumulated in the bottom of the pan. Be sure to separate the slices as you baste. This ensures ham will stay moist.

I’ve seen lots of recipes baste with the glaze as the ham cooks, but I’ve found better results basting with ham juices to keep everything moist, and then finishing with the glaze.

How Long Does it Take to Bake a Ham?

Bake your ham at a lower temperature for a longer period of time. Again, you’re just heating it through so you can serve it with dinner. Generally, you will bake at 275 degrees for 12-15 minutes per pound. Most hams come with baking directions that you can follow, but most will fall within these guidelines. You’re going to want the internal temp to be 145 degrees F for pre-cooked ham and 160 degrees F if cooking from raw.

So for a 10 lb cooked, bone-in spiral ham that’s 2-2 1/2 hours or until 145 degrees F.

ham glaze on a baster brush

Make the Brown Sugar Glaze

Make the glaze while ham is baking.

In a small saucepan, measure out all the ingredients and stir over medium heat. Simmer glaze until sugar melts and becomes syrupy about 1-2 minutes.

Glaze, Broil and Rest

Once your ham is done cooking, add a glaze to caramelize and lock in some extra flavor. Instead of using the pre-made glaze that comes with the ham, I opt for my Brown Sugar Glaze Recipe. I like to separate the slices (since this is a spiral ham, after all) and brush the glaze onto as much of the ham as possible.

Bake glazed ham at 425 degrees F for 10 minutes or until sticky and set. Remove ham from oven and cover with foil to rest 10-15 minutes. Carve and serve.

How to Carve Bone-In Baked Ham

Baked ham with a bone running right through the center can be a real pain if you don’t know what you’re doing. The only way to get the meat off is to work with the bone and cut around it.

  1. But first things first: let your ham rest 10-15 minutes after glazing, tented with foil.
  2. Transfer ham to a carving board (or cutting board with a kitchen towel underneath).
  3. Place ham bottom side up, locate the center bone and cut around it completely.
  4. There are natural sections of meat, separated by fat all around the bone. Cut through these separations to get slices. Place onto a serving tray.

Leftovers

Have any leftovers? Store ham in a covered airtight container in the fridge for up to five days! Or if you don’t have enough to save, consider making a different dish from it (such as Ham Salad).

Side Dishes

And of course, you can’t have baked ham without:

and maybe some Carrot Cake for dessert 😉

Soft, light and pillowy, these rolls are made with all-purpose flour and honey, perfect for making sliders with Crockpot Pulled Pork or along side Vegetable Beef Soup. Bread Making Basics

Working with yeast and making bread doesn’t have to be hard. I’ve listed a few tips here to help you along. While making bread seems to be time consuming, most of the time spent is waiting for the dough to rise.

  • Yeast– I use active dry yeast and love Le Saffre brand. (You can get a big 1 lb pack of it at Costco, Fred Meyer or even Super Walmart sometimes!) The brand doesn’t really matter, just make sure you are using fresh yeast that isn’t close to expiring.
  • Warm Water– to proof the yeast, you stir it together with warm water. If the water is too hot, you will kill your yeast. If this makes you nervous, err on the side of cooler than warmer. Think baby bath water temperature.
  • Kneading in the Flour– when using a stand mixer, its easy to knead in too much flour, making your rolls heavy. We aren’t going for heavy. We want light and pillowy rolls! So after adding flour in bit by bit and you notice the dough is taking shape, feel the dough. It should still be tacky but not sticky enough to leave a residue on your hands. The bottom half of the dough will still be stuck to the bowl and the top half won’t be. Totally normal.
  • When in doubt: it’s better to have your dough too sticky than too dry. You can always add a bit more flour to the dough as you’re forming your rolls and you notice they are too sticky.

How to Make Dinner Rolls

Making rolls and bread in general, may seem tedious, but by following these step by step directions, you’ll have perfect results every time! For full recipe details, check out the printable recipe card below.

Prep Baking Dish

Spray a glass 9×13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. Alternately, you can line a metal 9×13 pan with parchment paper, spray with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. (The parchment paper will help avoid dark, crispy bottoms.)

yeast blooming in bowl

Make Yeast Mixture

In a large bowl, stir warm milk, yeast and honey together until mostly dissolved. Set aside to proof 10 minutes. Once it looks frothy and/or bubbly, it is ready. If no bubbles have been made, start again with cooler milk or fresher yeast.

Add Flour to a Mixing Bowl

While the yeast is proofing, measure 2 cups of flour into the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the milk and yeast and stir on low using the dough hook. Once the flour has mostly incorporated, stir in melted butter and salt.

Knead the Dough

Continue adding in flour, bit by bit, until dough is tacky but won’t stick to your hands and the bowl is mostly clean. I used exactly 4 cups, but your dough could take less or more flour. Knead for 5 minutes.

Grease Dough + Bowl, Let Rise

Grease dough and bowl, then cover to rise 1 hour in a warm spot in your kitchen.

Divide Dough into Equal Size Balls + Let Rise a Second Time

Once roll dough has doubled in size, remove from bowl, divide into 16 equal pieces and roll into rolls. Place into the prepared 9×13, cover gently with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and set aside for the second rise. Once rolls have puffed and almost doubled in size, preheat oven.

brushing butter on dinner rolls

Bake + Brush With Butter

Bake until golden brown. Brush rolls with melted butter and serve warm.

Storing Dinner Rolls

The great thing about this recipe is that you can make them ahead and reheat when needed. To store them, allow to cool to room temperature and keep in airtight containers or ziplock bag. The colder you store them the longer they keep. These rolls will stay good at room temperature for up to 4 days, in the fridge for up to 6 days and in the freezer for up to 4 months!

What to Serve with Dinner Rolls

Rolls of any kind are great stand alone snacks or perfect for small lunch sandwiches. But for dinner, here are some delicious options that would work perfectly with these Dinner Rolls.

This three-ingredient Oven Roasted Brussel Sprouts recipe is a delicious vegetable side dish. A brown, crispy exterior with a tender middle. They are a perfect and simple accompaniment to any dinner.

Brussels Sprouts: What to Buy

This roasted brussel sprouts recipe is a simple three-ingredient recipe. You’ll probably have olive oil, salt, and pepper on hand and will only need to buy the brussel sprouts! You have some options to choose from so consider these things before buying:

  • Size – the bigger they are the more time they’ll take to roast. You can cut down this time by buying smaller rounds and by chopping them in half.
  • Prep Work – you are going to have to wash, cut and prep each little sprout. To make this process even faster you can buy brussels sprouts that are already trimmed and ready to go. Just make sure to cut off the stump at the end and that no outer layers look gross. If there are some, simply peel them away.
  • Frozen or Fresh – I would not recommend using frozen brussels sprouts for this recipe. I’d either go with some on the stalk or even the bagged brussels sprouts that are trimmed and washed.

Customize Your Brussels Sprouts

You can customize this side dish by adding some delicious add-ins. Try adding parmesan for a cheesy twist or cajun seasoning in the place of salt and pepper. For an even more crunchy texture, you can add panko breadcrumbs.

What are some other ways you’ve customized this recipe? Let me know in the comments below 🙂

cutting brussel sprouts on a cutting board

How to Roast Brussel Sprouts

For full details on how to roast brussel sprouts in the oven, see the recipe card down below 🙂

Preheat + Prep

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

There is no need to soak brussel sprouts before roasting. To prepare them, simply wash brussels sprouts, peel outer (dirty) leaves, and trim bottoms. Discard these extra leaves and pieces. Halve clean brussels sprouts and place them onto a baking sheet.

Drizzle with Olive Oil + Seasonings

Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Toss to coat thoroughly. Then you’re going to want to spread these out into a single layer, all facing flat side down. This is to ensure even roasting. If they are too close, they end up steaming each other, so don’t overcrowd either.

Roast In the Oven

Roast Brussel Sprouts 20-25 minutes, or until brown and tender to your liking. (I turn mine after 20 minutes and bake another 5-10.)

How to prevent bitterness:

Overcooking brussel sprouts leads to bitterness. To prevent this my suggestions are to:

  • not overcrowd or overlap
  • halve and cut each piece down so they are as uniform in size as possible
  • flip during baking
top down view of roasted brussel sprouts on a white serving dish

How to Serve Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Besides eating this dish plain, you can use and enjoy roasted brussel sprouts in a variety of ways. Consider these recipes from the site:

You can even make a dipping sauce! A sweet balsamic syrup is super tasty with roasted brussel sprouts. Or have them as a side with these main dishes:

Storing + Reheating Roasted Brussel Sprouts

This is a great make-ahead recipe because leftovers can last in the fridge for up to 4 days. Seal in an airtight container to keep the freshness to a maximum. However, keep in mind that roasted brussel sprouts get a little smelly the older they get. So maybe make these a day ahead of time at most.

Reheat in the oven, in a skillet, or in the microwave. The microwave is the fastest but will leave them a bit soggy while the skillet and oven work best for warming.

Even though this Pumpkin Pie Recipe is a really simple and basic version, it is a tried and true, classic recipe that has zero cracking. It’s homemade, easy to make and so flavorful! Pie Crust Options

The base of any pie recipe is the crust! For a pumpkin pie, you have three basic options for crust. This decision comes down to preference. I always use a shortening crust because it’s what I grew up with, but here are some other choices:

  • Store-Bought – some people are perfectly happy and content with store-bought pie crust (either pre-pressed or the dough that you roll out and blind bake). If this is you, great! IF you want to make it from scratch see my two recipes below!
  • All Butter this pie crust uses all butter (no shortening) and yields flakey delicious results. One recipe makes 4 crusts so be sure to use the serving adjuster in the recipe card.
  • Shortening this pie crust recipe uses more ingredients but is a little bit more forgiving than the all-butter recipe. Plus I have some tips about blind baking.

Pumpkin Pie Filling vs Pure Pumpkin

This Pumpkin Pie recipe calls for 100% Pure Canned Pumpkin. This is a plain, pureed pumpkin that is canned with no additional sweeteners or spices. For this recipe, we add things like eggs for structure, spices for flavor, and sweetened condensed milk for moisture and sweetness.

Pumpkin Pie Filling is also canned but has spices and sweeteners added in already. They are commonly mistaken for the same thing. They are not! Be sure to use 100% Pure Pumpkin.

Traditional Pumpkin Pie Toppings

The two most traditional toppings to pumpkin pie are whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. You can absolutely buy these or if you want to stick to the homemade route I have a recipe for both homemade whipped cream and homemade vanilla ice cream.

You can also top your pie with things like graham cracker crumbs, a sprinkling of cinnamon, a streusel topping, toasted nuts, or even caramel sauce.

How to Make Classic Pumpkin Pie

Everyone has a recipe for pumpkin pie that they are cracking out for the holidays but let me tell you that this Pumpkin Pie Recipe will be your new go-to. It’s a good solid fall-back recipe that everyone will be impressed by! For a step-by-step video guide scroll down to the recipe card below 🙂

1. Preheat Oven + Prepare Pie Crust

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prep and roll out your pie crust if applicable! There is no need to blind bake your pie crust, it will bake along with the filling.

2. Make Pumpkin Pie Filling

In a large bowl, whisk pumpkin, condensed milk, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together until uniform in color and smooth. Pour pumpkin mixture into unbaked pie shell and spread evenly.

3. Bake + Cool

Bake 40-45 minutes until the center is set. Remove from oven and cool completely.

What If My Pie Cracks?

While this pumpkin pie recipe won’t crack (because of the sweetened condensed milk), other pumpkin pie recipes can. While having a crack isn’t the prettiest thing, don’t worry! This is what whipped cream and/or crumbled gingersnaps are for! Spread or pipe cream overtop of the entire pie, then decorate with any desired garnishes.

My Pie Crust is Getting Too Dark!

If your pie crust is getting too dark and your filling hasn’t set yet try using a pie shield (or simply cover the edges with aluminum foil) and continue baking. Also, try moving your pumpkin pie lower down in the oven. Typically, the higher in the oven, the darker on top it’ll get.

4. Refrigerate + Serve

Refrigerate until ready to serve. Cut into slices, top with cream, and serve!

Storing Pumpkin Pie

This Pumpkin Pie Recipe Does Need to Be Refrigerated.

After baking and serving, refrigerate your leftover pumpkin pie to help it keep. This pie will last 5-7 days in the fridge, but to be honest, I usually don’t have any leftovers. It’s THAT good!

Can You Freeze Pumpkin Pie?

Absolutely you can! What makes this the best recipe for pumpkin pie is that you can make it months in advance for the ultimate holiday prep.

  • Freeze. Simply mix your pumpkin pie filling and freeze right in the unbaked pie shell. Make sure to protect against frostbite by covering your pie with foil and or plastic wrap. Freeze for up to three months!
  • Bake. Bake as normal, no need to defrost the pie. If you’re feeling nervous, you can defrost your pie in the fridge 24 hours before you plan to make it.

Other Thanksgiving Pies to Try

While the obvious and classic choice for a Thanksgiving dessert is Pumpkin Pie, here are some other tasty and appropriate choices:

Whether you are making this for Thanksgiving, or just love a good slice of pie, this recipe will not disappoint. Make this pumpkin pie your family’s tradition this Thanksgiving!
