Turkey Salisbury Steak

Turkey Salisbury Steak

I made Turkey Salisbury Steak. Sacrilege, I know. But, you most likely won’t even notice because I made these the very same way I would do a regular beef Salisbury steak. Just as delicious with less fat and calories than the beef version. Who knows, you might even like this better than the original!

Main Ingredients Needed

You’re going to need a lot of the same ingredients needed for a traditional Salisbury Steak Recipe minus the beef! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground Turkey – I bought mine from Costco but any ground turkey brand will do. Turkey contains a lot less fat than its beef counterpart.
  • Breadcrumbs – these are just
  • Onions – for a subtle onion flavor!
  • Egg – this is used as a binder to the rest of the ingredients.
  • Ketchup – used for moisture and flavor.
  • Ground Mustard – for its tangy and pungent flavor.
  • Garlic Salt – for seasoning and slight garlic flavor.
  • Salt and Pepper – don’t skip out on these two, they are essential for good tasting food.
  • Olive Oil – this is used to brown the turkey steaks and mushrooms.

How to Make Turkey Salisbury Steak

Making these turkey Salisbury steaks is so easy with mouthwatering results. Here’s how to make it:

  1. Start by mixing all the turkey Salisbury steak ingredients together. Stir it up really well and then form into little mini loaves or patties.
  2. Brown them off in a little olive oil. They won’t be cooked all the way through and that’s just fine because they’ll finish cooking in the gravy. Set these aside.
  3. Now you can brown off some onions and mushrooms in that same pan. This should take maybe 5 minutes or so. Pull these guys out too.

Mushroom Gravy

The last thing to do is make the gravy. Here’s how to make it, and for full details see the recipe card below!

  1. Make a roux with flour and butter, whisk in some beef stock and finish with a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Add in the par-cooked turkey steaks and the cooked mushrooms. Cover and simmer until gravy has thickened and meat is cooked thoroughly.
  3. Mentally prepare yourself for delicious food and then serve as you like!

Side Dishes

Gord and I loved this meal, and so did Brooke surprisingly {minus the mushrooms}.  I served this over riced cauliflower, but traditional mashed potatoes would probably be even better. Here are a couple of other tasty ideas:

  • Mashed Sweet Potatoes – this goes along with the comforting aspect of the dish and is perfect to eat with leftover gravy.
  • Roasted Asparagus – this is a healthier option that can be baked in the oven while the turkey Salisbury steaks are cooking away. Top with a little parmesan, salt, and pepper.
  • Potato Rolls or Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls – consider some carbs to eat alongside this meaty dish. Spread soft butter over warm rolls and scoop up some of the gravy while you’re at it.

Gosh, I love food!

Leftovers

Any leftovers can be stored in the fridge, covered, for up to 3 days. The gravy keeps everything moist so this Turkey Salisbury Steak recipe is perfect for meal prep.

Turkey Salisbury Steak

Salisbury Steak got a healthy upgrade with this Turkey Salisbury Steak Recipe. Less fat and calories than the beef version but just as good!
servings 4 servings
Prep Time 15 mins
Cook Time 30 mins
Total Time 45 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil divided
  • 1/2 cup diced onion divided
  • 8 oz sliced mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose flour heaping tablespoon
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • dash Worcestershire

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, stir turkey, egg, breadcrumbs, half the diced onion, ketchup and spices together until combined. Form 6-7 patties and brown both sides in 1 tablespoons olive oil in large, deep skillet. Remove from pan and set aside. Patties will not be cooked completely and that's totally ok!
  • Pour in remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil into skillet. Saute last of the onions and mushrooms until browned and tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
  • Melt tablespoon of butter into pan. Sprinkle in flour and whisk to form a paste. It might seem to form crumbs because it's a little dry; that's ok! Slowly whisk in beef broth to avoid lumps. Bring to boil to thicken, then reduce heat to simmer. Pour in Worcestershire sauce. Slide in browned turkey steaks and spoon sauce over to coat. Add in cooked mushrooms and onions overtop and cover. Simmer 10 minutes or until gravy thickens even more and turkey steaks and cooked thoroughly.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes {or in my case, riced cauliflower}.

This is my first turkey recipe I’ve ever tried, and let me say it’s absolutely delicious, and super easy to make. My 3yr old loves it. Thank You for sharing such a delicious recipe. I made mashed potatoes and green beans for the sides. So comforting.

Delicious! Everyone in my family loved this, even my youngest who only likes boxed mac n cheese. This will be added to the regular rotation in our house. Thanks!!

It’s 2019. This is the best recipe for turkey Salisbury that I’ve ever… So moist and dreamy!!!! I only subbed the beef broth for veggie broth, and regular mushrooms for enoki! The kiddos couldn’t tell there were mushrooms! 🙃 🙌🏽

My husband and I love this recipe and using ground turkey is such a great option for salisbury steak. I keep going back to this dish for a favorite weeknight meal. I use low sodium beef broth to cut down on the salt content. Excellent recipe!

I cannot wait to give these a try😊 I just had Gastric Sleeve surgery 2 months ago. Beef and pork are not allowed since they are harder to digest. I’m constantly looking for recipes that I can make that I’m allowed to eat and my family will still love so thank you😊

I made this lastnight with my grandson, OH MY YUMMYNESS!!!

Yes, but the flavor won’t be quite as similar to Salisbury Steak. If you’re ok with that, then go for it! It’ll substitute 1:1 nicely.

This is the first recipe I ever found from this blog, and it sparked my love for what you have to offer. I’ve been a subscriber ever since and enjoyed this meal several times, as well as some of your newer recipes. This one, however, is my very favorite. 🙂

We love this Turkey Salisbury Steak recipe. My husband’s had heart surgery and after looking for healthier recipes I found this and have been making it ever since. Thanks for giving us alternatives to red meat. 🙂

Just made this tonight. It was delicious! Substituted a few ingredients, only because I did not have them–Panko (chinese breadcrumbs), Dijon mustard (1 tablespoon), garlic powder and a pinch more of salt, and canned mushrooms. Will make again. Thank you!

Tried your recipe and it’s great. Didn’t have beef broth so I used milk and water instead. The mushroom/onion mixture gave it color and it was creamy and delicious. This is exactly the recipe I was looking for. Thank you!

I made this last night and it was so delicious. I left out the mushrooms since my husband and I don’t care for them and I also didn’t have any garlic salt, so I substituted Montreal Chicken seasoning. Delicious!!

I made these last night and they were a HUGE hit. I realized at the last moment I had no flour (eek) so I thickened the gravy with cornstarch and it was still great. Served over riced cauliflower steam-sautéed with a bit of beef broth and some garlic. Thank you!!! This will be a regular at our house.

I made this in meatball form. I didn’t have beef broth or boullion; I used au jus sauce mix for my broth and it was soooo good. Plus I added more ketchup to meat mix and 1t or Worcestershire sauce. We had this over mashed potatoes.

I made these tonight for dinner. I followed the recipe exactly like it was and I have to say this is one of the best turkey recipes that I’ve made. It was so good and most importantly very easy to make. I’m so glad I came upon this recipe. Thank you.

I had ground turkey that I needed to use… today! I had no idea what to make with it until this popped up! It was quick, easy and amazingly delicious!! My 22 month old “helped” me prepare it and she actually ate it. I served it over brown rice and steamed brocoli. This is a very close second to your slow cooker Tri tip recipe!! Yum!!

    Lauren,
I made this for dinner tonight. SO. GOOD. I used some left over home made beef jus in place of some of the broth, but still. So amazing.
I don’t normally comment on blog posts unless it’s drool worthy, and this is. I literally licked my plate. I never lick my plate.

My husband is allergic to beef and pork. So I am always looking for new recipes for chicken and turkey 🙂 I would have to take out the beef stock but, the other things will work!

My hubby bought a TON of ground Turkey at Costco like 6 months ago, because he wanted to make his own burgers.
It’s still sitting unopened in the freezer. So, this is happening! Pinned
